Dear Neighbor,

This communication provides an update regarding the on-going environmental work (e.g., inspections, groundwater sampling, and groundwater corrective action activities) being conducted at the Former Acme Visible Records site (aka former Wilson Jones Company [WJC]), located at 5327 Three Notch’d Road (Site).  All investigation and remediation are proceeding pursuant to state approval and oversight through the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ).

Background

The Site was historically operated for office equipment manufacturing. Manufacturing operations ceased at the Site in approximately 2001. Production equipment associated with the former manufacturing operations was decommissioned, demobilized and/or removed from the Site after the active operations terminated. The Site has been undergoing environmental investigation and remediation since approximately the early 1990s. The Site is currently inactive other than the on-going environmental work. The primary constituents of concern at the Site are volatile organic compounds.

Groundwater Corrective Action

Soil remediation was completed at the Site in 2019. No further active remediation of the soil is expected.

Groundwater monitoring conducted since 2019 has shown decreases in groundwater contaminants. This reflects that the source of contaminants in soil has been removed.  Further active groundwater remediation is now focused on volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The groundwater contaminant area is similar in nature and extent as presented in previous reports and appears to be confined to the WJC site. 

Following in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) groundwater injections on the north side of the railroad tracks, additional injection wells were installed on the south side of the railroad tracks. Baseline groundwater sampling was conducted in February 2023.  ISCO injections were conducted on the south side of the site to address groundwater VOC impacts in May and June 2023.  Post-injection monitoring was then conducted in August 2023.  The results of the injections and post-injection sample results will be presented in the 2023 Annual Corrective Action and Groundwater Monitoring Report due to VDEQ September 1, 2024.  However, based on a review of the data collected in November 2023, the groundwater contaminant area appears to be confined to the WJC site.

Based on the analytical results from additional groundwater sampling to be conducted in April 2024, an evaluation will be conducted to determine whether additional groundwater injections are necessary and, if so, which chemical oxidants will be used.  If determined to be necessary, additional ISCO injections will likely be planned for Summer 2024. Once active remediation is complete, the Site will be subject to on-going monitoring and the institution of engineering and/or institutional controls. 

Also, WJC continues to conduct semiannual groundwater monitoring as part of the Facility’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Permit, administered by VDEQ. The groundwater monitoring results are reported to VDEQ on an annual basis (September 1st).   WJC is expected to file a Uniform Environmental Covenant with VDEQ and Albemarle County in the near future to restrict use of the property to non-residential and prohibit the use of groundwater at the site for drinking water purposes.

Crozet Independence Day Celebration

The Twelfth Annual Crozet Independence Day Parade and Celebration –  Saturday, June 29, 2024

It all starts with the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) parade at 5:00 PM at Crozet Elementary School. The parade goes down Crozet Avenue through downtown Crozet to Claudius Crozet Park.  The Parade Grand Marshal is TBA.

If you would like to be a part of the 2024 Crozet Firemen’s parade, please submit your entry to be in the parade  to ensure you are included in the lineup. Lineup will be based on a first come basis. Horses/livestock will be placed near or at the end of the parade. Lineup will begin at 4:00 P.M. at Crozet Elementary School and the parade ends at Claudius Crozet Park.

The celebration begins at King Family Vineyards after the parade.  Bring a lawn chair if you want to be comfortable as you listen to the local bands: Chicken Head Blues Band and Ian Gilliam and the FireKings.  The celebration is the same as past years.  Traditional American Fourth of July fare will be available, including hot dogs,  hamburgers, chicken, funnel cake, BBQ, and sno-cones. In addition, vegetarian and vegan choices, tacos, and other favorites will be available! Local beer and Bold Rock Cider, as well as King Family Vineyard wines will also be available for a separate cost.  Kids amusements are available as well.   Event culminates at 9:30 PM with a stupendous fireworks show. (We have it at 9:30 PM so it’s late enough to be dark, but not too late to for the youngsters to view the show.)

There are no dogs or pets allowed in the event space.
No coolers are allowed as well as outside alcohol (ABC regulation).

Designated smoking areas are provided and we ask that you only smoke in those areas. 

How much would you pay for such good times?  All that’s asked is a donation of $5 per person (and  children 9 years and under are free) as you enter the festivities (parking is free and exiting quick).  The non-profit civic groups in Crozet are the ones that benefit from any money raised above the cost of the event, so please be generous.  Most years, we’ve donated over $6,000 to CVFD, WARS, and other civic groups.

Making a Contribution

These events involve a lot of donated time from a lot of individuals, but they can’t happen without financial contributions, too. We want everyone to enjoy our small-town event, so we ask for donations at the entrance – A donation of $5 per person (children 9 and under are free) as you enter the festivities (parking is free and exiting after the fireworks will be quick).  Your donation helps to pay for the fireworks and event expenses.

The Crozet Board of Trade (CBT) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  It paid the deposit to secure the fireworks show and is raising money now to pay the second half of the cost, as well as the deposit for the 2025 show—which is expected to cost $30,000.  The total goal of the 2024 campaign is $40,000. We recommend you consult your tax advisor about deducting this donation.

The non-profit civic groups in Crozet are the ones that benefit from any money raised above the cost of the event.  Most years we’ve donated over $6,000 to local civic groups, including the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department, Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, Claudius Crozet Park, and the Crozet Trails Crew (among others), so please be generous.

Of course, we appreciate all donations, but to boost our efforts to cover the fireworks, we have three leadership donor levels and we are hoping that you will show your support by becoming a lead patron this year.

  • For a gift of $500 or more, if you provide us with your banner, we will display that banner at the entrance to the park during the event, identify your patron status in the Crozet Gazette and event handbill and announce your support from the stage at the event.
  • For a gift of $250 to $499, you will receive published thanks in the Crozet Gazette and event handbill and announce your support from the stage at the event.

It takes a village – won’t you help out on Saturday, June 29th for an hour?

We need your help for just an hour or two on Saturday, June 29th.  The sign-up website to help with the Crozet Independence Day Celebration (CIDC)  Saturday, June 29, between 4PM to 10PM (or Sunday morning to pick up the park).  There are a variety of tasks and time slots. Most of the time slots are only an hour – so there’s lots of ways to help and still enjoy the event.

When you sign-up it will ask for your name, email and, optionally phone number.  No one else can see your email and phone.  We promise we won’t share it.  It’s helpful for us to have it if something happens and we need to let you know about a last minute change.

We urge church groups, civic and neighborhood associations to sign-up.  Crozet Trails Crew and the Crozet Fellowship Church each have already volunteered to staff one spot the whole evening!  Let’s see which group can have the most volunteers!

  • April 10, 2024 at 7:00 PM at Brownsville Elementary School. It begins with an open  house where posters displaying current County projects will be on display. At 7:30 pm we will begin the presentation on:

Montclair rezoning project has Board of Supervisors public hearing February 21, 2024 at 6 PM

The Montclair rezoning proposal includes more higher density housing for Crozet. As with other housing rezonings it does not provide supporting infrastructure. The Montclair rezoning proposal is scheduled to go before the Board of Supervisors on February 21st at 6PM at their regular meeting

RT. 684 (Half Mile Branch Road) CLOSED FOR PIPE REPLACEMENT Wednesday, February 14 thru Thursday February 15, 2024

The Virginia Department of Transportation is replacing a pipe on Route 684 (Half Mile Branch Road) in the Crozet area and will close the roadway between Route 1013 (Harvest Farms Lane) and Roseland Farm, Wednesday at 8 a.m. until Thursday at 3 p.m.

Today (2/14), shortly after 2 p.m., Half Mile Branch Road reopened to traffic between Route 1013 (Harvest Farms Lane) and Roseland Farm. The contractors expected to work through Thursday at 3 p.m. but completed the work in less than half the time they anticipated. The detour utilizes U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) to Route 691 (Greenwood Road) to Route 691 (Jarmans Gap Road).

One private entrance to Roseland Farm will provide access to local traffic. The work is near King Family Vineyards but will not affect access to the business.

  • We will respect everyone’s time by starting and ending on time. We will work to set and follow agenda topic time allotments.
  • Everyone is responsible for helping to stay on topic. Speak up if you feel like we’re getting off track and need to move an issue to a “parking lot” for possible future discussion.
  • Everyone is encouraged to participate. You may be asked to share what you think, or we may ask for comments from those who haven’t spoken. It is always OK to “pass” when you are asked to share a comment.
  • Listen respectfully, without interrupting. Listen actively and with an ear to understanding others’ views.
  • One person speaks at a time. If you think you will forget an idea or question that comes to mind, write it down.
  • Challenge ideas, not individuals.
